Apollo & Daphne

2024. Ring, powder-coated brass, sterling silver, dimension:30mm x 50mm x 6mm

According to Greek mythology, Apollo, charmed by Daphne’s beauty, chases her through the woods. Desperate to escape him, Daphne beg her father to take away her beauty. Fulfilling her wish, the river god Peneus turns her into the laurel tree, thus allowing her to escape from Apollo’s grasp. In
response to the story, I decided to depict this pivotal moment when Daphne transforms within Apollo’s inescapable embrace in the form of a hybrid ring.

The ring with one half depicts Daphne’s transformation to the laurel tree. While the other half portrays the Sun God Apollo’s close approach toward her. This ring is not only my first experimentation with motion within contemporary jewellery, but it also allow me to investigate methods to convey storytelling via
the act of object making
